1209:

The AVG software protects your computer on multiple levels. In case you need to disable AVG, please consider which part of the protection you need to switch off. The AVG parts and their purpose are:

  • AVG Resident Shield
The Resident Shield is the main component protecting you from viruses. It scans accessed files and if a virus is found, the access to the file is blocked. This applies to executing infected programs, as well as to opening of infected documents or any other files.
Disabling of the Resident Shield is sometimes recommended before installation of a new software or drivers, since it can prevent conflicts that would otherwise occur during their installation. This however applies only to limited number of specific programs and drivers, and there is no general reason why AVG Resident Shield should interfere with an installation of any application.
To disable the Resident Shield, please:
    • open AVG User Interface
    • double-click on the Resident Shield
    • un-tick the option "Resident Shield active"
    • save the changes
Please do not forget to activate the Resident Shield again once you performed the tasks requiring its deactivation.
  • AVG Firewall
The Firewall component is designed to control and filter network traffic based on a set of rules. You might need to disable the Firewall while troubleshooting connection problems, or to install some network-related application. Please bear in mind that installation of some applications with function similar to that of AVG Firewall may result in conflict and malfunction of one or both programs/components.
To disable the AVG Firewall, please:
    • open AVG User Interface
    • double-click on the Firewall
    • select "Firewall disabled"
    • save the changes
Please remember to enable the Firewall again once the reason for its disabling is over.
  • AVG E-mail Scanner
The AVG E-mail Scanner may affect your sending/receiving of e-mails, since it is designed to scan the messages and needs to access them in some way. The way of accessing the messages depends on your e-mail client, but only the Personal E-mail Scanner plugin can interfere with the communication between your computer and the e-mail server.
To disable the Personal E-mail Scanner (if it is installed), please:
    • open AVG User Interface
    • in menu "Tools" select "Advanced settings"
    • go to E-mail Scanner - Servers - POP3, and click on the POP3 server (usually AutoPOP3:10110)
    • un-tick the option "Activate this server and use it for receiving e-mails"
    • repeat the same for SMTP server
Please enable the servers that were enabled originally again when possible.
  • AVG Web Shield
The AVG Web Shield component checks HTTP and PROXY communication, and scans files that are downloaded to the computer through the related ports/sockets. Additionally, it is able to scan files downloaded using ICQ and MSN instant messengers.
To disable the Web Shield, please:
    • open AVG User Interface
    • double-click on Web Shield
    • un-tick option "Web protection"
    • switch to tab "Instant messaging" and un-tick "Instant Messaging protection"
The component should be enabled the same way when possible.

If you require any assistance on this or any other subject, please feel free to contact our Technical Support.

To solve this issue, please try to remove the content of Temporary Internet Files (open Internet Explorer ->Tools menu -> Internet Options -> Temporary Internet Files section -> Delete Files button -> Delete All Offline Content).
Then, please reboot your computer and try to download the latest installation file of the appropriate edition that you have ordered:

AVG Anti-Virus

AVG Internet Security

AVG Anti-Malware

AVG Anti-Virus plus Firewall

In case you are using some security application for content filtering (CyberSitter, Content Watch ...) please make sure the AVG website* is set as a trusted one (so files coming from it are not filtered / modified) or try to temporally turn the content filtering application off.

First, check your computer with the vcleaner.exe utility. This utility is able to clean/remove most known types of viruses, backdoors and Trojan horses. It isn’t necessary to install this utility, just save it on your PC and run it.

You should check your computer this way:

  • download the vcleaner.exe utility
  • reboot your computer in the Safe mode
  • use double-click on the downloaded file to launch it
  • please wait until the test finishes and restart your computer

After checking your computer with vcleaner.exe, you can begin installing AVG. We strongly recommend installing AVG using the latest installation file, which can be found on our web site Downloads-Programs.

When the installation is complete, please update your AVG, to be sure that the latest virus definitions are in place.

AVG 8.0 - Legacy OS support

Please be informed that older versions of Windows operating systems (Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows Me) are no longer supported. It is possible to install AVG 8.0 on the following OS's (and Service Packs):

For more details, please check the web page of the appropriate AVG product in the System requirements tab (for example AVG Internet Security).

Why don't we support older operating systems with AVG 8.0?

Unfortunately the new scanning engine and on-access scanner, as well as the whole AVG technology cannot work on the old systems. These systems do not provide features and functionality that are necessary for proper detection and especially removal of malware. The systems are insecure and have already not been maintained by the OS vendor for several years. Therefore we cannot guarantee sufficient protection.

Solution

We suggest that you upgrade your OS and/or install the latest Service Pack to be able to use all the AVG features. We also recommended that you use WindowsUpdate to keep your operating system up-to-date.

Most of today's viruses (Trojan horses, I-Worms, Worms, etc) create their own files which contain nothing but a body of the virus. In such cases the only way to remove the infection is to delete the infected file. When you moved the file to the AVG Virus Vault it was deleted from its original location, coded, and then saved in a non-executable file in a hidden folder. Your PC is no longer infected then.
If you are not missing any data file and your applications are running, then you can delete these vaulted files from the AVG Virus Vault program.

You can do it selectively from AVG Virus Vault program -> select files -> delete. Or you can delete all AVG Virus Vault contents in one go: - Open the AVG Control Center program -> right click on "AVG Virus Vault" tab -> choose "Empty vault".

Note that files removed from your e-mails are also moved to the AVG Virus Vault. If you do not have a content filter set, then these files are infected and can be removed, as shown above. If you have set a content filter, then you should decide what to do with the vaulted files.
If you want, you can set automatic actions in the AVG Virus Vault. Please open the AVG Virus Vault program -> "Service" menu -> "Program setting". Here you can set any required automatic actions.

All AVG commercial editions have many user benefits in comparison to the AVG Free Edition.

  • 1 or 2-YEAR license includes virus database and program updates within the license period.
  • FREE, 24/7 e-mail access to AVG Technologies professional TECHNICAL SUPPORT with expert consultation and industry-leading rapid response time.
  • Access to reliable worldwide HIGH-SPEED "Akamai" SERVER network  for downloading update files.
  • AVG UPDATE BULLETIN - e-mail information concerning the availability of new updates, current virus outbreaks, and other important news.
  • More options for configuring multiple program and test settings (many more configuration options can be adjusted according to user needs and preferences).
  • Multiple languages. Note that all languages are included in one multi-lingual product (no need to buy a specific language version).
  • Compatibility with Windows 64-bit edition.
  • Remote and central administration of all AVG components for the Network environment.

Please note that the AVG Free Edition has the following limitations:

  • AVG Free Edition has no technical support!
  • AVG Free Edition cannot be installed on server operating systems (such as Windows Server 2003).
  • It is prohibited to install and use AVG Free Edition  in a commercial or network environment.
  • AVG Free Edition is not compatible with Windows 64-bit editions.
  • AVG Free Edition does NOT include a firewall and anti-spam protection.
  • Scheduling options in the AVG Free Edition are very limited (only one scheduled update per day, one scheduled scan per day etc.).
  • AVG Free Edition does not have guaranteed access to high-speed servers for downloading updates and program upgrades.
  • AVG Free Edition does not offer advanced testing options, such as password-protected archives reporting, adjustment of scan process priority and many others.
