Personal E-mail Scanner is a plug-in designed to scan outgoing and incoming messages on workstations. It is really not recommended to install this plugin on the e-mail server platform of any kind due to huge number of all processed messages.  We recommend to uninstall the "Personal E-mail Scanner" from the server using the last
installation file (available at http://www.avg.com/doc/programs ).

How to uninstall the Personal E-mail Scanner plugin:

  • download the installation package from the link mentioned above
  • run the installation package and choose "Add/Remove Component" option
  • remove the tick from the box for the Personal E-mail Scanner
  • now, finish the installation process - the plugin is removed safely

Unfortunately this option is only available in MS Exchange Server 2003, where Microsoft Virus API 2.5 support has been implemented. The setting is available in the Microsoft Exchange System Manager.

The scanning of e-mails in MS Exchange 2000 using AVG for Exchange is done by the Virus Scanning API 2.0, which is used for e-mail scanning by many anti-virus systems. In the case of VSAPI2.0 is the email scanned part by part (there isn’t another solution in MS Exchange – to be exact the API doesn’t support that). This is the reason why the whole message can’t be deleted or moved.

More information about VSAPI 2.0 is available here:

Emails which are sorted by SMTP are at first saved to virtual queue of incoming emails in C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1\Queue\ on the server and then moved to the store of MS Exchange server (here are finally scanned by AVG for Exchange).

If there are any infected messages in this folder, the AVG Resident Shield detects them. In this case Microsoft recommends that the folder is excluded from on-access scanning or disable the scanning of these file types. List of folders which are recommended to be excluded from AVG scanning is available in FAQ 593.

This fault of type “Warning” doesn’t come directly from AVG, but from Exchange. It is stating that AVG is trying to get a variable which isn’t in the message. By the specification the variable should be there, therefore AVG is trying to pass it. This fault will not stop AVG working correctly. (You can still see in the log file that the e-mails are being scanned).

The only option to get rid of this message is to decrease the level of logging for Exchange/Systems/VirusScan (can be set in Exchange System Manager).

After the installation of AVG (on some supported e-mail servers) it is recommended that you add the path to the folder where e-mail attachments are saved to the AVG Resident Shield excludes tab (AVG Control Center->AVG Resident Shield->Excludes tab). It is necessary to reboot the server then.

If you use AVGADMIN for Remote Administration, please note that you have to set it up in AVGADMIN as well.

Note: List of folders which are recommended to be excluded from AVG scanning on MS Exchange server is available in FAQ 593.

How to use AVG 7.5 on terminal servers:

Please open the following key from the Windows registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and delete the key AVG7_CC

Run AVG Control Center and select Scheduler component. Then press Scheduled Tasks button and it will open the Scheduled Tasks dialog.

Select the Update Plan in the Basic mode, press Edit Schedule button and disable this schedule by unchecking the option Periodically check for Internet updates, press OK button. Please do the same operation with the Test Plan in the Basic mode.

This operation will create two files called sched-0001.cfg and sched-0002.cfg in the "Documents and Settings\<current_user_profile>\Application Data\AVG7" folder.

Please copy these to files to "Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVG7" folder.

This operation will disable the basic update and test plans for all users, then you can create a new plan for the server according to your needs for all users. You can also do all these steps using a command line. In this case you need to launch the installation file with these parameters:

avg75f_xxxaxxx.exe /NO_CC_STARTUP /NO_AVGW_STARTUP /DONT_START_APPS /NO_WELCOME

We also recommend to install AVG without the Personal E-mail Scanner plugin. You can use this parameter:

/REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_EMC

You can use these parameters even while installing AVG for the first time or for the repair installation as well. With these parameters the AVG Control Center will not be launched (default plans as well). Test Center and the first run wizard will not be launched when user logs.

If you install AVG 7.5 File Server Edition, then it is possible to disable running of default scheduled tasks for each user directly during the setup installation wizard.
