AVG 7.5 Technical FAQ » Update » AVG Managed Update
This service reduces the reaction time of the update process on the users side, shortening the delay from update release to the moment when a workstation is updated.
AVG TCP Server on the users side receives information about the release of a new update directly from the AVG Technologies server. Based on this, the AVG TCP Server downloads new update files and asks defined stations in the network to update the AVG clients.
From the moment when the first message is received, AVG TCP Server ignores all other messages for a set time delay to protect AVG TCP Server against fake messages in context with a potential DOS attack. Also the message is encrypted by an asymmetrical code to rule out the possibility of receiving a fake message or of a third party modifying the message. The message consists of a TCP packet that includes an encrypted message of app. 300 bytes containing information about the new AVG update. Even if this process fails, there is still the scheduled update plan.
Within AVG Managed Update it is also possible to use additional AVG Technologies services according to your subscription level, including the ability to check that your AVG installation is updated correctly. In conjunction with this service the AVG TCP Server is able to inform the AVG Technologies server if your installation is up-to-date. Data sent to the AVG Technologies server is used only to support the desired services and will not contain any more information than is strictly necessary to identify the user and the state of his AVG installation.
The recipient of this message should have a permanent IP address on the Internet. The relevant port has to be enabled (4157), on all relevant firewalls, to receive the packet from the AVG Technologies server.
