AVG 7.5 Technical FAQ » Update » Network update
If you are using a proxy server in your network, you have to define it in AVG Update Manager:
- run AVG Control Center (by double-clicking the AVG icon in systray)
- right-click the Update Manager component and choose the Settings option
- press the Proxy tab
- enter correct proxy server (DNS name or IP address) and port number (you can get this information from your network administrator). If the proxy server requires the authentication, enter correctly also username and password
You can check if you are using proxy this way:
- click on the Start -> Settings -> Control Panel
- please find and open "Internet Options"
- then please switch to the "Connections" tab
- click on the "LAN Settings..." button
- the information about the proxy is displayed in this window
Run the AVG TCP Monitor application from START -> Programs -> AVGADMIN 7.5 -> AVG TCP Monitor.
Click on configuration and set these items in General tab:
License number– to activate the local web server service it is necessary to enter multi-license number of AVG
Local HTTP server root– defines the folder where the update files and AVGINFO.CTF will be saved (local path has to be used)
HTTP server root– defines the path on which the TCP Server (web server) will serve the update files. If for example /update parameter is used, the web server will serve the update files on this URL address (defined by parameter Local HTTP server root) http://{IPaddressOfServer}:{port}/update
Example of configuration:
The IP address is e.g. 192.168.0.1
The port for communication of AVG TCP Server is kept to the default value 4156 (recommended)
The parameter Local HTTP server root is set to C:\avgupdate (the update files are saved here)
The parameter HTTP server root is set to /update
If you have these settings, then you have to change the update server URL from default http://update.grisoft.cz/softw/70/update to http://192.168.0.1:4156/update. From this moment all clients which have this URL will be updated from this server (the folder C:\avgupdate has to include update files and Avg7info.ctf on the server, the periodic download of the update files can be set in scheduler tab).
Run the AVG TCP Monitor from START > Programs > AVGADMIN 7.5 > AVG TCP Monitor and click the Configuration button.
Choose the InetLite tab and fill the proxy fileld. Use the loginname:password@proxy:port format.
Note: It is not possible to use the "@" sign in password for the proxy as after @ is proxy:port expected.
If you have configured AVG to update from your local web server and you can see this error message after the AVG client update request:
Update server is too busy. There are too many pending update requests at the moment and the server can't fulfill them all. Please follow these steps:
- Try to run the update later or schedule an automatic update for another time.
- If the problem persists, please refer to the FAQ section of our website for an answer to your question.
probably the AVG license number is not entered correctly in the AVG TCP Monitor settings. Please check this first. If it does not solve the problem, please try to change the AVG TCP Monitor settings as follows:
1. Create the folder c:\avgupdate on the local hard drive of the computer where the AVG TCP Server is installed.
2. Run the AVG TCP Monitor "C:\Program files\Grisoft\AVG TCP Server\avgtcpmon.exe" and click on the "Configuration" button.
- Enter your complete AVG Network edition license number into the "License number" field.
- Please select (tick-on) the "Enable HTTP Support" option.
- Enter "c:\avgupdate" text (without quotes) into the "Local HTTP server root" field.
- Enter "/avgupdate" text (without quotes) into the "HTTP server root" field.
- Enter "c:\avgupdate\avgtcp_http.log" text (without quotes) into the "HTTP log file path" field.
3. On the "InetLite" tab enter the URL "http://www.avg.cz/softw/70/update" (without quotes) into the "Update URL" field.
If you use a proxy server, specify it in the line "Proxy" (for example this way - proxy:port number). You can set up user name and password for your proxy this way: http://<user>:<password>@<server>:<port>.
4. Save the configuration and restart the AVG TCP Server using the buttons in the AVG TCP Monitor.
5. To make sure that the AVG TCP Server is running correctly, create the following file C:\avgupdate\test.txt and write inside this file the following text "Test of TCP Server", and save the file.
Now if you run the address "http://<IP address of your server>:4156/avgupdate/test.txt" in a web browser, you should see the text "Test of TCP Server" if the web server for the AVG TCP Server is configured correctly. Remember to replace the "<IP address of your server>" with the correct IP of your real server.
6. Open AVGADMIN, menu Settings->Shared settings for stations->part Internet Connection->double-click on line "Server" and select "Edit". Replace "www.avg.cz" with e.g. "Local server", and as a URL enter "http://<IP address of your server>:4156/avgupdate". This server has to be active in the list of servers, i.e. ticked.
7. Now you need to deactivate the basic update schedule as follows:
- Open AVGADMIN and select "Shared Settings for Users" from the Settings menu.
- Select the "Scheduled Tasks" tab and double click on the "Update Plan in Basic Mode" item.
- Uncheck the "Periodically check for Internet updates" checkbox and click on the OK button to confirm your changes.
Note: If the "Scheduled Tasks" section does not contain any scheduled settings it is necessary to copy them from one of the users' scheduled settings to the Shared User Settings and then perform the steps above.
8. Then create a new update schedule for stations:
AVGADMIN->Settings menu->Shared settings for stations->Scheduled tasks tab->right-click anywhere and select "Create" schedule->Update
If you set up the centralized updates this way, update files should be downloaded correctly into the selected folder and AVG clients will be updated. If there is any remaining problem with update mirroring, please contact our technical support.
Starting from the AVG 7.5 version, update files are now being distributed in a new format with enhanced features and smaller size. These update files are not a part of the operating file avg7info.ctf, but only of the new avginfo.ctf. Older versions of the applications for update files mirroring are not checking the new operating file. Therefore, from now on, only one update file in the original update format will be distributed, and will allow users of the older versions to upgrade to the most current one. Support for the original format will end by the beginning of the year 2007. Users that will not upgrade to the newest version will not be able to download the most current update files!
If you are using AVG TCP Server or the AVGINET Lite versions 7.1.383 or older, it is crucial to upgrade to the most current version. The current version is included in the installation package of AVG Remote Administration. This package can be downloaded from this location.
These changes also affect AVG TCP Server for Linux, that is available as an independent installation package at this location. It is only necessary to upgrade the application if you are using version 1.3.1 or older.
