AVG 8.0 Technical FAQ » AVG for Mail Servers » Exchange 2000, 2003, 2007
It is recommended to exclude the following folders from AVG scanning (on the sever where AVG for MS Exchange is installed) :
M:\ (for MS Exchange 2000 only)
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\CONNDATA
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MTADATA
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\SCHEMA
C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox (MS Exchange 2007)
Please exclude these folders in AVG Resident Shield settings (AVG -> AVG Resident Shield component -> Manage exceptions button) and also in the configuration of the scheduled AVG test which you run on that server (AVG -> Tools menu -> Advanced settings option -> Schedules -> Scheduled scan -> What to scan tab -> choose "Scan specific files and folders" and exclude folders mentioned above).
Please bear in mind that it is needed to exclude these folders for a specific scan if you would like to launch the scan manually (AVG-> Computer scanner -> Scan specific files and folders -> Change scan settings).

Unfortunately this option is only available in MS Exchange Server 2003, where Microsoft Virus API 2.5 support has been implemented. The setting is available in the Microsoft Exchange System Manager.
The scanning of e-mails in MS Exchange 2000 using AVG for Exchange is done by the Virus Scanning API 2.0, which is used for e-mail scanning by many anti-virus systems. In the case of VSAPI2.0 is the email scanned part by part (there isn’t another solution in MS Exchange – to be exact the API doesn’t support that). This is the reason why the whole message can’t be deleted or moved.
More information about VSAPI 2.0 is available here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;328841&Product=exch2k#4

It is necessary to install Service Pack 1 or higher for Exchange Server 2000 prior to installation of AVG.
Emails which are sorted by SMTP are at first saved to virtual queue of incoming emails in C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1\Queue\ on the server and then moved to the store of MS Exchange server (here are finally scanned by AVG for Exchange).
If there are any infected messages in this folder, the AVG Resident Shield detects them. In this case Microsoft recommends that the folder is excluded from on-access scanning or disable the scanning of these file types. List of folders which are recommended to be excluded from AVG scanning is available in FAQ 1013.
This fault of type “Warning” doesn’t come directly from AVG, but from Exchange. It is stating that AVG is trying to get a variable which isn’t in the message. By the specification the variable should be there, therefore AVG is trying to pass it. This fault will not stop AVG working correctly. (You can still see in the log file that the e-mails are being scanned).
The only option to get rid of this message is to decrease the level of logging for Exchange/Systems/VirusScan (can be set in Exchange System Manager).

Starting in the build 29 (beta build) the AVG 8.0 plugin for Exchange server supports the MS Exchange server 2007 x64.
- Installation is the same as on MS Exchange 2000/2003.
- The default program folder: C:\AVG4ES2K\.
- The setup language depends on regional settings. The plugin is in English only right now. During the installation process the information store restart is needed.
- The installation log can be found in: %temp%/setup.log
You cannot access the plugin interface on MS Exchange 2007 using the Exchange Management console. It is launched by the avg4es2kadm.exe file in the plugin program folder C:\AVG4ES2K\. The GUI/configuration is the same as in MS Exchange 2000/2003.
Scan properties, attachment filter and reports can be changed from the Advanced AVG settings.
Uninstallation can be done by launching the setupes.exe file with the uninstall parameter. Typically C:\AVG4ES2K\setupes.exe /uninstall. During the uninstallation process the information store restart is needed.
In rare cases, MS Exchange 2003 does not display all available counters of AVG for Exchange in the Management console (e.g. in comparison with the description in the AVG Email Server User Manual).
This issue is not caused by AVG for Exchange plugin. The solution is described at:
