This is a feature. These operating systems don't support remote access, hence it is necessary to install AvgAgent locally, e.g. by using a Logon Script. The installation of AVG can be done remotely, but only if AvgAgent is installed on the remote station.
The manual installation can be done as such:
You have to copy avgagent.exe, avgagent.lng and avgagent.ini files to a folder on the station and run command avgagent.exe /install /start. After that you can use all advantages of AvgAgent as remote installation of AVG or upgrade of AvgAgent.

If you like to install the AVG on clients remotely using the AVG S-Tool (CD mode), you have to use the AVG installation folder (AVG7 folder on the AVG installation CD). If you don´t have the installation CD or this CD is too old, please follow these steps to extract it:

  • download the latest AVG installation file on Downloads-Programs page
  • rename the downloaded file from "AVG75F_xxx.exe" to "AVG75F_xxx.RAR"
  • double-click on its name to extract it into the installation folder

If the WinRAR application is not installed on your computer, please download the trial version of this software here: www.rarlabs.com and install it first.

  • Cannot Log In

The problem could be caused by insufficient access rights on target PC. For the remote installation of AVG it is required that target PC's local administrator's account is used, in domain networks it is recommended to use domain administrator account.
If the operating system of target PC is Windows XP, check following (and modify if it does not correspond):
Start->Settings->Control Panel-> Administrative tools->Local Security Policy-> Security settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options -> Network Access: Sharing and security model for local accounts
default value : local users authenticate as guests
new value : local users authenticate as themselves
To prove this, open Start-Run item on source computer and enter path
\\<target_machine_name>\C$. Example : \\tester\c$ .
Then press enter. Open Winnt folder and try to save any file in there. If this is not possible, you do not have access to the C drive on target machine.

  • Ports used by remote installation

If you use a firewalls in your network, you need to allow communication on following ports to install remotely:
1) Ping (ICMP type 0 - Incoming echo request) - required to find a remote station in the network.
2) Microsoft Files and Printers Sharing (TCP ports 139, 445 and UDP ports 137,138) - required to copy AvgAgent tool on the remote computer using Admin$ sharing.
3) RPC: Remote Procedure Call (TCP and UDP port 135) - required to launch AvgAgent service on the target PC.
4) Communication on TCP port number 6150 for AVG S-Tool and AvgAgent common communication. Using this port AVG S-Tool controls the AvgAgent tool and uploads the installation files of AVG onto the target station.
